It depends on how far you can travel. The big ones are pretty far away, i.e. Austin, TX Wichita, NE Chicago, IL. These are considered GTs and have 100+ people ussually.

Then there are smaller ones that are put on at the local shops. I know you have done some of those and it would be a great place to start really learning the tournament layout. Beyond that, there are tournaments that are slightly larger than local ones that aren't on the GT level. You can attend these in places like Joplin, MO.

As far as what armies are competitive at the moment and what you should take the be competitive, I'd take a look at bloodofkittens.com or rankingshq to get a feel for what is winning right now.

Hope this helps.

Serious answers:

1) Know the rules. Inside & out. Every angle. Read every army book you can get your hands on.
2) Figure out what the top builds of the top armies are. Practice against them.
3) Know the basic scenario rules. Some large tournaments may have custom ones, but be familiar with knowing what you can sacrifice, what is disposable in your army, etc.
4) Practice. My rule of thumb is to play 1 more game per practice day than you will at a tournament. This also helps you get in more turns in a tournament, which helps (usually).

You didn't mention a game system, which influences things a bit...

Sisters are generally a fairly weak army unless they are in the hands of an experienced player. Theynwill eat some ofmthe horde lists that are prevalent in sixth, but flyers will be an issue.
