I have a couple friends who want me to run a role play game for them. I have never dm'd before and am looking for a fantasy setting that is fun and requires minimal prep time for the dm.

Savage Worlds.

$10 rulebook, rules take about 4 minutes to learn.

Looks interesting. Which one is the core book? What are the good settings to run? When I did a search, I opened a can of worms, being about 50 different settings and supplement books.

Here's a PDF version of the updated core rules. If you're looking for a hard copy i'd recommend the deluxe edition or the explorer's edition.

As for world setting, it's your preference. The core rules are 100% generic so can run them as a space opera sci-fi or a swords and sorcery clone.

If you do want to get a campaign setting, i'd recommend the fantasy one just because it has more that applies to those kinds of campaigns.

For your first dm experience I would go with a setting you have familiarity with the rules on. That way you can just concentrate mostly on story and not have to look for rules too often. It will make your life easier, and then you could jump to new systems once you have confidence.

Lots of things out there I just can't run mostly due to rules... Shadow run, Exalted, earthdawn, etc.

Excellent. Savage worlds is my favorite system outside of DND because its ease of use.
