PostSubject: Iron Fist vs xtra HW   30th December 2011, 1:58 pm

So was looking at ogres this morning and talking to the Capt'n about iron fists-vs-xtra hw and wanted to get the opinions of some more people who have played against, and play with Ogres. Here is how I'm figuring it.

Running a unit 4 wide and fighing against a ws4/t4 (st4) model the xtra hw gives me 4 xtra attacks, 2 xtra hits, and 1 xtra wound. The iron fist on the other hand will save 1 out of every 7 wounds(using 7 to make the parry math easy as opposed to 1/6 and .8/5, then the parry will save an additional 1, so 2 out of 7 (it is actually 11 out of 36). So if a unit of saurus did 7 wounds without iron fists I would loose 2 models, with iron fists I only loose 1.

With ogres being multi-wound models it seems that keeping as many models alive for as long as possible is the way to go as 1 wound or 3 wounds still dishes out the same hurt.

Any thoughts on this? With more model frontage the math may change but I see running ogres 3 wide then reforming to 4 wide after round 1.

Had a similar discussion with Darkhorse, and I think Ogre Warrior units with Iron Fists are the way to go. I see the same conclusion as Rockwars, you need models to survive in order to get the attacks you need if you hope to win. Parry saves are a great addition, and the extra hand weapon, as Rockwars said, is only good for the front rank. In my opinion, additional hand weapons only have an advantage at Weapon Skill & Strength 4 or higher.

Great weapons are the way to go... but if your convinced you want to use bulls then ironfists are better

I think guts are great, but having more bodies is also necessary.

I have played both and have always been more offensive oriented, so I wanted the extra hand weapon attack. I played a game with fethos this week using his suggestion of the iron fists and I liked it. Yes, I am an irongut man, but will use the iron fists when fielding the bulls from now on.

Thanks for the input DH, was hoping to hear from someone who had used them. It just seems to me that over the course of a game the iron fists just pay off more. Will you be using them at Shiloh?
