So with the little I have talked about fantasy on here and then talking about with my gaming partner (who was collecting fantasy behind my back! Scoff!), my interest peeked and I started looking around online. I came across several people who have "unit filler" in their units. For example, an ogre in a free company unit and a flagellant diorama in a flagellant unit. Is this commonplace? Is this legal?

Unit fillers are great because they can save you from Having to puchase extra models. My only caution is do it right using different models or dioramas, if it's a base for 4 sticking 2 models and a tree, fence or some other special bit is fine just don't do a tree or fence by itself.

And that is legal? Instead of actually having 40 freecompany I could have 30 and have other things to take up the space, as long as I paid for the 40?

its perfectly legal and if done right can add a LOT to a unit. However if your only reason for doing so is to save 5 bucks I've noticed it looks kinda bad. I guess I've seen some unit fillers that look stupid or out of place. If you model one up well or have a cool idea it can add a great deal to your army and also tell a little story.

In my dark elves I have a unit filler. Instead of 4 black guard I have an ogre base with a 2 black guard and a flagellant looking slave guy chained up on the base.

I don't have a problem with unit fillers at all. In fact i like them. If your going to do it take time and make it add to the unit instead of just saying "I'm a cheap bastard..."
