PostSubject: Disappointment @ Patriot Games   Disappointment @ Patriot Games Icon_minitime4th June 2010, 12:06 am

Patriot Games is coming up this Saturday and i'm really disappointed.

-Where is all the smack talk? Who is going to try and keep Wildeyedjester from Threepeating?!
-No grudge matches issued? What is this? I know Dannato's Endless wave of Necrons are wanting to thump my CSM's heads in.
-The LR boys aren't boldly proclaiming their two day take-over of NWA?
-Where are the finisher predictions?
-Not a single anti-space wolves comment? I think 50% of the lists this year are Puppies and no one has made a 'go fetch' joke yet.

And you call yourselves competitive wargamers. I'm ashamed of you.

(all in good fun) Surprised

I'm stoked for Saturday/Sunday and I hope everyone else in the area is too. Let's make it one to remember!

Why would you want to poke the puppies? We're barely house-trained and prone to leg-humping.

Great now you got him all fired up. He lives for opportunities to hump some hapless stranger or inanimate object....

I want someone else to experience the humiliation. I'll never forget last year...you make ONE joke about Patsy Cline and Monkey punches a hole in the wall, jumps through it, and humps your leg.

Well, taking a look at the list we have -

5 Chaos Marines
5 Space Wolves
4 IG armies
4 Codex Space Marines
4 Orks
3 Tyranids
2 Black Templar
2 Necrons
2 Blood Angels (expected more of these to show up)
1 Daemon Army
1 Sisters of Battle Army (be interesting to see if it is a pure sisters or mixed force)
0 Tau
0 Eldar
0 Daemonhunters
0 Dark Eldar
0 Dark Angels

That is a pretty good breakdown on armies. No big surprises. I was expecting more Blood Angles though. And some Eldar and Tau - really? No Eldar or Tau? I understand no Daemonhunters and no Dark Eldar, but I am pretty shocked a the lack of the other two.

So how is it all gonna pan out?

It looks like we have about three distinct groups of players coming. We have the Northwest Arkansas crowd, some folk from Little Rock, and a group from up around Kansas City. There are also a few stragglers from here and there.

Just by looking at the numbers I expect either Chaos Marines, Space Wolves, IG, or Codex Marines, or Oks to pull out the win - the more of a certain type of army, the better the odds of them winning.

With an abundance of MEQ armies it is fair to say there will probably be some anti-MEQ floating about. There are also quite a few IG players coming - with all the attention that the Leaf Blower has been getting lately we can also expect to see some elements that should deal with this type of list. You then get down into the Xenos forces - the strongest showing are the Orks and the Tyranids with a combined total of 7 players. These are usually horde type armies with a couple of strong units thrown in - and pretty much any solid player packs a few flamers just in case they face off against some hordes.

So where does that leave us? My guess is that no one runs away with it. With the way the armies are spread out and the amount of players I predict that no one wins all of their games. I am thinking everyone will have at least one draw - maybe even at least one loss.

So who's gonna win? Well - let me tell you who I think isn't going to win, that is much easier.

The Daemons are out - they are just too random for a five day event. If it is a strong list and played well they will place high, but you are bound to get one or two times where your preferred wave doesn't show up - and that hurts.

The Sisters are out as well - there is only one player playin them and they are just so niche that they will probably run into an army that will put a hurtin on them.

Blood Angels are too new of a codex and are missing a model for the Stormraven.

Black Templar have a shot, but there are only two players bringing them.

So this leaves us with the top 6 - the Space Wolves, CSM, Codex Marines, IG, Orks, and Tyranids. My money is on one of these winning overall. To narrow it down a bit more I am going to have to go with the Orks or Tyranids. Everyone is talking about Space Wolves and Guard all over the net, so people are probably building lists to counter them - these counters work pretty well against CSM and Marines as they are both MEQ - so this gives and edge to the Tyrandis and Orks.

Excellent Analysis, Big D. But what of the intangibles?

Will Big_D sport his nasty sweaty man-hanky? Man Hanky could remove x number of players from the running out of disgust.

Will Monkey threaten to beat more than a half dozen people to a pulp in a parking lot? Unconsciousness could remove y number of players from the running.

Will Littleboyblues be able to avoid 5$ pitchers? Cheap refreshments could remove z number of players from the running.

Will I be able to avoid frequent trips to the can? Intestinal Distress could remove q number of players from the running.

First, I prefer to hump animate objects.

Second, I promise only to threaten people behind their backs. I'll avoid the face to face.

Third, everyone loves a Kool-Aid Man entrance, so stop acting like it's distressing, capn.

The 'Nids scare me the most, as I tend to play mostly MEQ, and I've yet to face a fully conceived 'Nid army with the new dex.

Overall, I just want to have a good time. Patriot is usually pretty laid back, and that's the way I like it. That doesn't mean we can't go for the throat. Just smile while you're doing it.

Now, back to painting.

I'm going to go ahead and count Monkey out of it for the win. I expect to see him on the floor before game one trying to finish painting his models and I figure by game three he will be hallucinating from lack of sleep.

I'd place money on Jeremy, Matt Buchanan, Matt Harp, or the SOB player (depending on army) to take it, at least in Battle. I expect most of the Tyranid armies to not consist of 2-4 Tervigons (gogo objective missions!); by the same token, I don't expect to see Storm Ravens, and I expect Matt Harp will have more Thunderwolf Cavalry than the rest of the Space Wolf players combined.

Crazy. Necrons and Daemons had the exact same number of games where they disappeared into nothing.

Looks like I was a bit off in my pre-game predictions. IG ended up winning overall, with Space Wolves in second.

To be fair in my projections it did all come down to the final game and the way the drawings went - if we had been matched differently we could have had a Ork/Tyranid 1st and Second. Even then it was close the way it was - if Big Al or Myself had pulled a win instead of a draw against each other one of us would have come in second. The points were just so razor thin at the top that is was just gut wrenching playing the last game.

Talk about intense. I thought Will was going to lose control of his faculties during our last game. I should have know when he brought a bed pan to the table, things were intense. ;) Despite it all, his orks used some good orkie strategy to keep the draw. Doesn't hurt that the game ended after turn 5 right when you need it to, either.

Most of big_d's opponents think, at some point, he has lost control of his faculties.
